Professeur Khaled El Emam a fondé Privacy Analytics Inc. (PAI), pour commercialiser une solution au problème de la confidentialité.

En quelques années, l’expression «confidentialité des données» est devenu un enjeu social complexe.

“Historically it was ‘security by obscurity, It’s hard to find a truckload of paper files, but now it’s easy to lose a memory stick with data on 500,000 patients. ”  Says Dr. Khaled El Emam, the Canada Research Chair in Electronic-Health Information and Associate Professor in the Faculty of Medicine and at the School of Information Technology and Engineering at the University of Ottawa.

uOttawa Students collect innovation awards!

Le succès de deux nouveaux diplômés en génie de l’Université d’Ottawa, Kris Woodbeck et Mehrdad Rafat, a été reconnu en septembre 2008. à l’occasion du Défi innovation organisé par le Conseil de recherches en sciences naturelles et en génie du Canada (CRSNG).

The two graduate students each received a third place award in this national competition for students pursuing graduate studies in the natural sciences and engineering.  Woodbeck and Rafat join a number of uOttawa Engineering students who have won over $60,000 in innovation and entrepreneurship competitions in 2008.

Paul Lem, M.D turned entrepreneur

Paul Lem, M.D. departed from a traditional medical career path to become an entrepreneur after his experience with his first venture: Plexagen Diagnostics  a spin-off of  University of Ottawa and the Ottawa Health Research Institute.

Incogna: Une image vaut mille méta-balises

In 2007, while wrapping up his Master’s degree on image recognition,  Kris Woodbeck observed that leading search engines are great at searching text, but are at a loss when it comes to visual data.  Seeing an opportunity Kris Woodbeck developed an engine that looks at each picture, analyzing the pixels of each image and its associated meta-tags to places similar images together.

M. Woodbeck, nommé Innovateur de l’année 2007 par l’Université d’Ottawa et finaliste au Prix du jeune chercheur de l’année du OCRI en 2008.  M. Woodbeck a fondé Incogna Inc., une jeune entreprise qui offre officiellement ses services de recherches d’images sur Internet depuis Novembre 2008 .

Tito Scaiano takes research beyond the Ivory Tower

The business venture began as a small project to develop a standardized tool to study the yellowing effect of light on paper. The University of Ottawa’s researcher Juan Cesar (“Tito”) Scaiano was part of a network of pulp and paper researchers all tackling the same problem: how to prevent the yellowing of paper, particularly newsprint. Ceux-ci utilisaient toutefois différents modèles d’appareils d’exposition au rayonnement ultraviolet (photoréacteurs), ce qui rendait difficiles le partage et la comparaison des résultats.

Avec l’appui du secteur des pâtes et papiers, M. Scaiano et son équipe de l’Université d’Ottawa ont construit dix photoréacteurs normalisés qu’ils ont fait parvenir sans frais aux autres chercheurs du réseau. Cela a été la première étape de ce qui a conduit en 1997 à la constitution en société de Luzchem Research Inc.

MM. André Tremblay et Marc A. Dubé, uOttawa professeurs et innovateurs, ont mis au point un nouveau réacteur à membrane qui augmente le rendement et la qualité pour la production de biodiésel.

Renewable energy sources like biodiesel fuels are being hailed by governments, industry and environmentalists as a great panacea Poised to take advantage of this opportunity, start-up Bio-Diesel Reactor (BDR) Technologies Inc has been Incorporated in 2007, following four-and-a-half years of conceptual testing and experimentation, BDR is bringing innovative membrane reactor technology to market that promises to turn the biodiesel market on its proverbial ear.
