Start-up Garage tips – (Applications Due March 22)

There is one week left before the applications to the Start-up Garage are due! The applications are due Tuesday March 22, midnight. The results will be available on March 29th.

The applications will be judged by staff at TTBE and Ontario Centers of Excellence (OCE). Judging will be based on 14 criteria related to the questions on the application form. Each question will be rated 1-5. The teams with the highest scores will be selected for an oral presentation. We will be using Chide. It’s online Review Room http://chide.it/ . We will select a minimum of 3 teams for an oral presentation. Teams will present information that is generally found on the application.

To make sure you have the best chance possible, below are some tips for filling out the form, which is available on request from ttbe@uottawa.ca .

A. The Business Opportunity

1. Brief description – this is just to get you started – generally done well.

2. The need – Wear your customer’s shoes here. Be really focused on their problem, and not your solution. What is limiting their business, limiting their life experience, or costing them time and/or money, etc.

3. List 3 customers (companies or individuals) and tell their story. You should be specific. Tell the story of your first three customers, and why they will buy. Bring the problem identified above to life. It is best if you have spoken to them.

4. Others who will benefit but are not paying customers – Optional – if it applies, use it. If not, do not force something in here. If it does not apply, and you think of an imaginative way to answer this, that is fine too.

B Product or Service details
5. – self explanatory

6. Describe what you checked in 5. Tell us where you are now.

7. Tell us what you expect your product to look like when it is ready for the customer. Be concise, but if you need a few more words, do not worry about it. Just choose the information you convey carefully by asking if we really need to know everything that is there.

8. Let your competitive advantage shine here. What is it that your particular customers will value, that your competition does not do, or does not do well.

9. Build from 8. Link your advantage to your customer need. What are they really willing to pay you for?

C. Workplan – This is a 3 month workplan for the Start-up garage – June1 – Aug 31. Think of this section in the following manner – Objectives are the high level summary of what you are going to do, Steps are the specific plan with timeline for achieving the objectives, and the next section with details is you chance to convince us that you can actually carry out the steps, you understand where you can go wrong, and you have back up plans. All three sections should line up. Make sure you have milestones and steps that you can look back on at the end of the summer and be able to say that you were successful, or not successful. Know where you have to be in order to call the project a success, and worthy of continued investment of your time.

D. Follow up – What will be the next goal/business development milestones that you will have to achieve in order for your company to become a sustainable business? Outline specific objectives for the 6 months following the completion of the Start-up Garage on August 31.”

Best of luck, and hope to get your final submissions by the 22nd.
